Frequently asked questions

What do I need to start knitting?

To start with any project, you’ll need needles and yarn. If you’re using a pattern, pay attention to needle size and type (circular, double-pointed, etc.), as well as yarn weight and amount (given in meters, yards, or grams). These will be in the beginning of the pattern you’re using. You may also need stitch markers, tapestry needles, a cable needle, stitch holders, or a row counter.

If you’re just starting to get the rhythm of knitting, needles and yarn should be enough. But refer to the pattern and read through it before buying materials. I’m always happy to help decode patterns for new clients!

What are the easiest yarn and needles to start learning on?

I recommend US8 needles and worsted weight merino yarn in a light color. Both are the perfect size that make the material easy to maneuver, the light color helps with visibility, and merino is very soft yet holds firm.

Recommended brands: ChiaoGoo needles have a really nice weight and texture that make sliding stitches on and off super easy. Malabrigo Rios is a great worsted weight yarn that has fair pricing and a wide range of colors. You’ll find it at most yarn stores.

What will you provide for classes?

It depends on what you have! If you’re starting from the basics and you’re not ready for a pattern, I can bring practice yarn and needles so we can get the rhythm of casting on, basic knitting stitches, and casting off. However, I do recommend getting your own so you can practice in your free time!

I don’t know anything. is that okay?

Yes! I teach at all levels, but I’m most experienced in teaching people who have never held knitting needles before. It’s so much fun to help people grow, and I promise it’s not as scary as it seems.

Can you help me fix mistakes?

Yes! I charge $60 an hour for fixes, charging by the half hour.
